One the most well know verses in the Bible comes from today’s Gospel: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). Just before this verse, Jesus was speaking about how that love would be made manifest. He said: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:15). Jesus, lifted up on the cross is the manifestation of God’s love for us. Jesus offered his life to redeem us – that’s God’s love demonstrated.
This week’s Corporal Work of Mercy is Visit the Sick. This week do “facetime” or write a letter to someone you know who is sick. Print out the sick list from the bulletin and pray for them by name in your home. See about connecting with other families and supplying pizza delivery to hospital workers. God’s love can be manifest through our simple tasks of extending mercy to the sick and those who care for the sick. Add a cross to your Domestic Church prayer space. May the cross remind you of how God’s love was manifest when his Son was lifted up on the cross. May similar manifestation of God’s love be seen when you lift up and care for the sick. Peace.
