Preach the Gospel
One of my favorite saints is Francis of Assisi and my favorite quote from St. Francis is: “Preach the gospel. If necessary, use words.” Those words were framed and on the wall in the rectory of my last parish. In our second reading today St. Paul says: “if I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it.” Combine these words with those of St. Francis and we are challenged to preach the gospel through the life we live, and we should be fearful not to fulfill this responsibility. And it is indeed a responsibility. All it takes for evil to triumph is for enough good people to do nothing.
In today’s gospel we see Jesus healing people, going off to pray alone and travelling to other villages to share the good news. Like Jesus our lives need to find nourishment through prayer. Through such nourishment we are able to receive healing and to bring healing to others. Through God’s power received in prayer, we can be His witnesses wherever we are. What is important to remember is that through the nourishment of prayer (private or liturgical), we can be faithful servants who preach the Gospel. May we always preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words. Peace.
