Love vs. Law
In today’s gospel Jesus says: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish but to fulfill.” And the fulfillment of all God’s laws and all the words of the prophets can be summed up with one word – LOVE.
The law was necessary to give direction when the people got off track in their love for God and one another. The prophets came to challenge and exhort the people to remain faithful to the God that loved them and called them out of slavery into the promise land.
This past Friday, February 14, was a day when we recall love and share love with others, maybe in the form of a Valentine card, candy or flowers. However, we should be centered on love throughout the year. As we gather around the table of sacrifice, we recall the love God showed in giving us his Son and the love Jesus showed in giving himself in the Eucharist. May we who celebrate the love of God and receive His very presence in the Eucharist be constantly converted in love. May God’s law guide us and assist us in loving both God and neighbor. Blessings and peace.
