If we look in the Bible at how different people were called by God we notice one similarity those called by God felt unworthy. In our gospel today Peter responds to the call of Jesus with these words: Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man. In the first reading Isaiah said: Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips. In the second reading Paul said: I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God.
Looking further, when Moses was called by God he felt unworthy and responded: Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt?(Exodus 3:12). When God called Jeremiah he replied: Ah, Lord God. I know not how to speak; I am too young (Jeremiah 1:6).
By God’s favor each of us has been called. Through our baptism we are called to live as children of the light. Although you may not feel worthy, your feelings put you in good company. Like the Biblical people Peter, Isaiah, Paul, Moses and Jeremiah, you are called and chosen by God. You must have faith in God. You are each called in some particular way to live your faith and to share the Good News with others.
If your call has been to married life, perhaps attending my Adult Faith Formation on Monday night (2/11) the topic is the Sacrament of Marriage will help you to live the call of that sacrament more affectively. Peace.
