Middle School Ministry Grades 6-8
Welcome to St. Rita’s middle school ministry!
We will start the 2019-2020 year with a special Catechetical Sunday Mass for faith formation families on September 22 at 10 a.m. On Monday, September 23, there will be a Welcoming Session-Orientation for all families and their children at 4:00 p.m. in O’Malley Hall.
Weekly catechetical sessions are held in Gara Hall, 4:00 – 5:15 p.m. Parents may sign a waiver to have their children sign themselves in once they’re dropped off at St. Rita Parish. The kids are taught by a team consisting of Theresa Costanzo and volunteer catechist Rich Brockmann, along with a few high school youth leaders. The themes/topics are on a three-year rotation basis, so the youth learn in a more dynamic manner in a youth ministry setting. This year, we will teach the Creed using St. Mary’s Press resources for middle school youth. In addition, we are very excited to share with the youth and their families the Magic Center’s new modules to integrate science with our Catholic faith. Click here for the resources.
Once a month, the youths enjoy their First Fun Day Monday community building sessions comprised of games and/or other activities combining faith with fun. During Lent, the middle school youth rehearses and presents the Living Stations of the Cross for the parish community at our Lenten Soup and Stations. In May, Middle school ministry leads all elementary faith formation participants in a service project to collect and assemble toiletry kits to homeless young adults of Covenant House in Hollywood. We usually end each year with an outing or celebration.
New this year! All families are invited to four Family Faith Sundays at 9 a.m. in Gara Hall (before the 10 a.m. Mass) over breakfast to foster a vibrant faith community where families learn/share faith and worship God at Mass together. Family Faith Sundays are scheduled for September 29th, November 3rd, March 1st, and May 31st.
Lastly, we are mandated to conduct an annual safe environment training for our students before February 2020. The Our faith formation staff conducting the training has been certified to teach “Empowering God Children and Young People.” This year, the lesson topic will be “Internet Safety.” Permission slips are included in the registration packet and will be emailed to parents when needed.
