Lectors are lay ministers who participate in the mission of preaching by proclaiming the Word of God to the congregation during the Liturgy of the Word at all Masses. This ministry was restored by Pope Paul VI in the apostolic letter Ministeria quadeam in 1972. By hearing God’s voice speaking through the Bible texts, we come to a fuller understanding and appreciation of the meaning of these texts. Lectors practice the readings in advance so they may convey these meanings as accurately as possible. Lectors are called to a deep relationship with God specifically through the words of Scripture, this treasured legacy that has been preserved and handed down for thousands of years.
