The End of the World

At the beginning of today’s gospel Jesus says to his disciples: “In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the skies, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” At the end of the gospel Jesus says: “But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven nor the Son, but only the Father.”

In this gospel Jesus is speaking about the end of the world. Concern over when the world would end is nothing new. The disciples of Jesus questioned him about it, people throughout the centuries have wondered about it, and many people today still try to predict it. Remember, Jesus said that the day or hour no one knows. What we do know is that we have to be prepared. Before we go on a trip we know we have to prepare some things. If we enter a competition the better prepared we are the better we do. Is our faith any different? If our goal is eternal life we have to make preparations. If the end of the world is coming, what are we doing to prepare ourselves? Get to know Jesus. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and live your life according to the gospel. This is the best preparation. The end is coming; the question is, will you be prepared?
